Cruise out of control
Porter was following in the R8. “What was that all about?” he asked when we stopped. “It was weird because your brake lights ware on, but you were pulling away from me.” Reaching a long straight, I’d activated cruise control for the first time and set it to 100km/h, then used the Set + button to add five or so kays. Moments later, the car was accelerating on its own. The Set – button had no effect and neither did the Cruise-off stalk switch. By then I was hard on the brakes, with speed still rising. On the verge of turning off the ignition, I instead dipped the clutch. The engine raced, hit the cutout and dropped to idle. What happened? Ford says the car we drove had a pre-production throttle body, and that the accelerator cable had snagged. Customer cars come with a new, modified throttle body that, Ford claims, fixes the drama.
